The Dark Divine by Bree Despain

Released: December 22, 2009
Publisher: EgmontUSA
Pages: 372
Series: The Dark Divine #1
Rating: 5 stars
Grace Divine, daughter of the local pastor, always knew something terrible happened the night Daniel Kalbi disappeared--the night she found her brother Jude collapsed on the porch, covered in his own blood--but she has no idea what a truly monstrous secret that night held.

The memories her family has tried to bury resurface when Daniel returns, three years later, and enrolls in Grace and Jude's high school. Despite promising Jude she'll stay away, Grace cannot deny her attraction to Daniel's shocking artistic abilities, his way of getting her to look at the world from new angles, and the strange, hungry glint in his eyes.

The closer Grace gets to Daniel, the more she jeopardizes her life, as her actions stir resentment in Jude and drive him to embrace the ancient evil Daniel unleashed that horrific night. Grace must discover the truth behind the boy's dark secret...and the cure that can save the ones she loves. But she may have to lay down the ultimate sacrifice to do it--her soul.
Grace just wanted to find out what happened between her brother, Jude, and Daniel that night. But she got so much more than just the answers she was looking for. And so did I!

With twists and turns each flip of a page, I was on my toes the entire time. It was hard for me to put down and it seemed as though I couldn't read it fast enough. I love stories where you can't quite figure things out until its flat-out told to you at the end of a novel. Then once you know, every little detail that was thrown around in the book just clicks and you can't believe you didn't put two and two together sooner. The Dark Divine was one of those stories!

What an intriguing and captivating debut, filled with fantasy, mystery, and action - it will leave you begging for more. I truly hope there will be a sequel to follow because I still have a few unanswered questions and there are even a couple of events (if you've already read this, then you ought to know what I'm talking about) that I would love to see explored.
